The Change

There is lots about me that has changed now that I am a Mom. Much of it has made me feel like a whimpier human being - lead climbing makes me nervous, I don't ride my bike downhill too fast, I won't go out on a run by myself when it's dark, I won't go hiking by myself and on and on. It would shame the pre-married me right out of my teva flip-flops.
BUT...there is one thing about me that I think is cooler now that I'm a Mom. I can catch frogs. Before I had a little boy enamored of animals, all my attempts at catching reptiles were uncomitted fakes. It wasn't that a frog or lizard was too fast for me, it was that I wanted them to be too fast for me that I didn't catch them. And if I ever did have a reptile in my hands, as soon as its little toes pushed into my palm I'd be throwing it to the grass. But for the admiration and pleasure of my firstborn I have changed. Since we've been here in frog territory, I catch them right and left so that I can be a hero to him. I can walk across our entire huge backyard with a frog bouncing against my fingers and pushing its legs through the cracks between my palms without a quiver. It makes me feel cool, and unafraid, and tough. Thank goodness for frogs. They're gonna pull my ego through this stage of life.

A frog in the hand is worth two dirty tevas on a lonely mountain trail. That is hilarious. I'm very impressed that you can catch a frog.
