The Kids Today

#1 got a couple of hits in his baseball game last Thursday.  It had been a long, dry spell up to Thursday.  So much so that I found myself staring hard at my boy through the fence as he waited for the pitch with a 2-2 count praying with lots of sincerity that the kid could get just one, little, bitty hit.  He got to first on the next swing and made his way around to home after some solid hits by his teammates.  The taste of a score must have been sweet indeed because the next time he got on base there was some daring oozing out of his shoes.  He ran from first to second on a hit from his teammate.  Then he saw an error get thrown so he hied himself off to third while his coach yelled, "Stay, stay!" and the fans in the silver stands cringed at the closeness of #1 and the ball that was quickly thrown to third base.  But then the ball went off the third baseman's glove so #1, not unnerved a bit by the near-out he had just experienced, kept himself going on to home while his coach kept steady with his call, "Stay!  Stay!"  With everybody half covering their eyes to keep from seeing the damage, #1 miraculously and triumphantly safely touched home.  It was maybe the best moment of his life ever of all time.

#2 had some bike malfunctions today so I took her down to a friends house on the back of my bike.  She actually uses the bike trailer that I take the little boys around in - except instead of sitting in the seat part that is too small for her, she stands up in the cargo area and holds onto the stroller conversion handlebars like a little charioteer.  So I pretty much feel like a law breaker riding around with her back there.  And maybe she felt that way too because as we were going along she started belting out one of her favorite pop woman-empowerment songs called, "My Fight Song."  Sometimes when the wind is blowing in your hair and freedom is pushing through your blood, you can't keep the music from coming.

#3 used to talk non-stop Star Wars.  On the way down to school in the morning, if he could get his hand in mine, he'd start pulling at my ear telling me all about the Star Wars game he was going to create and all the ships and characters that would inhabit it.  He could make it from the top of our hill to the school without a pause in his chatter and little expectation of any reply from me. But what is Star Wars to Lego Robotics?  Lego Robotics ripped up everything Star Wars in #3's mind, threw it out his ears, and took over the space entirely.  First thing #3 told me after he got out of school today is that he wanted to do the helicopter next in Lego Robotics at school.  Those blue eyes were so earnest and excited and begging for recognition of his intellectual and mechanical daring that I had to tell him I thought it was a pretty good idea.

#4 rode her bike along while me and and the husband, who was pushing the little boys in the jogging stroller, ran.  She was peddling away like her madwoman self a good bit ahead of us for the first little while, but then when we got to the hilly part she had to stop and wait for us to cross a street.  When she got going again and found herself struggling up the hill behind the husband and I instead of in front she was suddenly sooooooooo tired and didn't think she could ride anymore.  We encouraged her along and eventually she got up in front of us again.  We congratulated her and said, "Wow, look you're beating Mom and Dad!" and she added, "and Gideon and Zeke."  If you can double your numbers, I say, go for it.

#5 went around the Primary Activity on Saturday with #1.  They held hands as they went to different stations, #1 in his BYU shirt and #5 in his John Deer boots.  The one was in charge the other was adoring the one in charge.  It was good to see.

#6 is getting to be a boy that speaks lots of words and his round little face is getting all sorts of personality and opinion flashing through it.  He has an incredible smile when he giggles when he is getting tickled or in sword fights with his brothers, and an impressive scowl when he folds his arms across his chest and affirms to all things unpleasant, "no wike it."
